Clear Notes Privacy Policy

Draft. The highlighted details below are still to be filled in by the publisher. This document is not final and is not yet in effect.

Clear Notes is a notebook app. Most of what you write stays on your device. This policy describes the cases where something leaves it, and what happens to it when it does.

Your notes

Notebooks are stored on your device. If you turn on Google Drive sync, copies are uploaded to your own Google Drive using the drive.file permission, which gives the app access only to files it created itself. We do not run a notes server and we cannot read your notebooks.

Your account

Signing in is handled by Firebase Authentication, using either Google sign-in or an email address and password. We store your account identifier, email address and display name, and a small profile record associated with them.

Purchases

Plans are sold through Google Play. When you buy or restore one, the app sends the Google Play receipt to our service, which asks Google whether it is valid and then stores what plan your account has, when it renews, and a one-way hash of the receipt so the same purchase cannot be claimed by another account. We never receive or store your payment details: Google Play handles payment, and we never see a card number.

AI features

On-device AI runs entirely on your device. If and when cloud AI is enabled, choosing a cloud AI action sends the text that action needs to our service, which forwards it to an AI provider and returns the result. We keep a count of how many requests your account has made in the current period so we can apply your plan's limit. We do not use your notes to train models.

Audio and dictation

Recordings stay on your device and we do not upload them. Dictation uses the speech recognition built into Android. The app asks for on-device recognition and prefers offline processing, but on some devices and languages that is unavailable and Android falls back to its own speech service, which may process the audio in the cloud under Google's privacy policy rather than ours. We cannot control that fallback.

Diagnostics

The app uses Firebase Crashlytics, which sends a report when the app crashes. A report contains device and app state, not your notes. The app also uses Firebase Remote Config to change settings and turn features on or off without an update; it sends no personal data.

Permissions

Microphone, for recording and dictation, only while you are recording. Notifications, so a recording in progress can show its status. Network access. The app requests no access to your photos, documents or storage: opening and saving files goes through Android's own file picker, which grants access only to the file you pick.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account in the app, under Settings, Account, Delete Account, or on our account deletion page. Deleting your account removes:

Nothing about the account is kept afterwards. Two things are worth being clear about:

Keeping it safe

Traffic to our service uses HTTPS. Plan information is signed by our service and checked by the app, so it cannot be altered in transit. The records described above are held in Google Cloud and are not readable by other users of the app.

Children

Complete once the Play target audience is chosen. Clear Notes is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes we will update this page and its date. Questions, or a deletion request you cannot complete yourself: CONTACT EMAIL.
